Students will be able to:

  • define morphemes: word root, affixes, prefixes, and suffixes.

  • familiarize with words in which morphemes are contained.

  • Listen to random words and guess the meaning of unknown words.

  • Find word roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

  • Find the meaning of each prefix and suffix in a word.

1. DEFINITION OF MORPHEME

A "morpheme" is a short segment of language that meets three basic criteria, according to the Rochester Institute Technology:

1. It is a word or a part of a word that has meaning.

2. It cannot be divided into smaller meaningful segments without changing its meaning or leaving a meaningless remainder.

3. It has relatively the same stable meaning in different verbal environments.
